Cali bear
People often ask us what our favorite thing about California is. To us, it’s a state that’s known for so many amazing things, it’s hard to pick just one. You’ve got Disneyland, perfect weather for most of the year, sunshine and palm trees, the ocean, mountains, snow, sun, and the ability to be surfing in the morning and skiing in the afternoon. How many places do you know that can pull all of that off?
But, another thing the Golden State is known for is the California Grizzly bear. And for good reason. Back in 1889, a now extinct California Grizzly bear named Monarch, was being held in captivity due to him being the last known California Grizzly bear alive. At that time, Monarch’s image was captured by a newspaper reporter at the request of newspaper tycoon William Randolph Hearst. That image is rumored to be the inspiration behind the 1911 version of California’s State flag - hence, the California state bear.
So, when we were designing our California inspired artwork, we knew that a California grizzly bear needed to be represented. Thus, the Cali Bear was created.
